First settled by Europeans in 1751, it took eleven years for the town become incorporated, taking the name Templeton. The original settlement’s growth was stunted by the presence of the natives who lived nearby and posed a threat to the welfare of settlers. As the native population diminished, Templeton grew rapidly. Much of the growth can be attributed to the mills in town. The Chicopee, Miller and Otter Rivers all provided a great spot for mills to be built, with fast flowing water and large elevation drops in the water. By the mid nineteenth century, there were eleven saw mills and a plethora of manufacturers that produced goods such as furniture, clothing, machinery, shoes and tools. Today, the town of around 8,000 is a predominantly rural town with little industry as most residents travel to nearby Garner and Worcester.
