Uxbridge was first settled by European colonists in 1662, after land was purchased from Nipmuc natives who had previously settled in the area. The land was first part of neighboring Mendon, however in 1727 it became incorporated and named Uxbridge, after a town of the same name in England. Since its conception, Uxbridge was known for the production that came from the factories and the mills in town. The first mills were built near the end of the eighteenth century and were iron forges. Soon many new types of mills came to the area, including grist, saw and textile mills, which helped make up the twenty different types of mills in town. Daniel Day, a resident of the town established the first woolen mill in town and just the third in the country. The most notable product that these mills produced were the “Uxbridge Blues,” the first uniform of Air Force soldiers. Today, Uxbridge is a town of nearly 15,000 serves mostly as a residential town with some business strewn throughout.
