West Boylston was first settled by colonists in 1642 as part of Lancaster, which is the town many towns in central Massachusetts stem from. The town West Boylston was incorporated in 1808, and was formed by taking parts from nearby towns such Boylston, Holden, Lancaster, Shrewsbury and Sterling. The name West Boylston comes from the geographic location of the town which lies to the West of Boylston.
Prior to European colonists settling in the area, Nahsaway natives lived in the area, thriving along the local bodies of water. As colonists arrived in the area in 1642, they first settled and formed the town Lancaster. The need for expansion was quickly apparent and settlers began moving into neighboring areas.
As the area became more thickly settled, the emergence of industry in the town followed soon after. After the incorporation of the town, the 1800’s saw the construction of new mills and businesses in the town, which brought much wealth to the town and the surrounding area. Near the end of the century, in 1897, West Boylston was chosen as the site for a reservoir which would provide water to Boston. With three rivers feeding into the boy of water, it was an ideal site. Today, the town is a bedroom community for nearby locations throughout Worcester County. The close-knit community helps make this a desirable and livable town in a rural area.
